IELTS Test Modules Explained

(For Academic & General Training)

The IELTS exam assesses your English proficiency through four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each module evaluates specific language skills required for study, work, or migration.

 1. Listening Module

Duration: 30 minutes (+10 minutes transfer time)
Total Questions: 40
Same for Academic & General

Structure:

The Listening test consists of  4 sections:

1. Conversation in a social context (e.g., booking, inquiry)
2. Monologue in a social context (e.g., speech about local facilities)
3. Conversation in an academic context (e.g., students discussing assignment)
4. Academic lecture or presentation

Skills Assessed:

  • Listening for specific information
  • Understanding main ideas
  • Following arguments
  • Identifying opinions and attitudes
  • Spelling accuracy

🎯 Students must manage concentration carefully, as the recording plays only once.

 2. Reading Module

Duration: 60 minutes
Total Questions: 40

 IELTS Academic Reading

  • 3 long academic passages
  • Texts from journals, books, research articles
  • Complex vocabulary and analysis required

IELTS General Reading

  • Section 1: Social survival texts (ads, notices)
  • Section 2: Workplace texts
  • Section 3: One long passage (general topic)

Question Types:

  • Multiple choice
  • True/False/Not Given
  • Matching headings
  • Sentence completion
  • Summary completion

Skills Assessed:

  • Skimming & scanning
  • Understanding detailed information
  • Identifying writer’s opinion
  • Vocabulary in context
  • Time management

 3. Writing Module

Duration: 60 minutes
Two Tasks

IELTS Academic Writing

Task 1:

  • Describe visual data (graph, chart, table, map, process)
  • Minimum 150 words

Task 2:

  • Essay (opinion, discussion, problem-solution, advantages/disadvantages)
  • Minimum 250 words

IELTS General Writing

Task 1:

  • Letter writing (formal, semi-formal, informal)
  • Minimum 150 words

Task 2:

  • Essay writing (similar to Academic Task 2)
  • Minimum 250 words

Writing is assessed based on:

  • Task Achievement / Task Response
  • Coherence & Cohesion
  • Lexical Resource (Vocabulary)
  • Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Task 2 carries more weight (double score).

4. Speaking Module

Duration: 11–14 minutes
Face-to-face interview with examiner
Same for Academic & General

Structure:

Part 1 – Introduction & Interview (4–5 minutes)

  • Personal questions (home, work, hobbies, studies)

Part 2 – Cue Card (3–4 minutes)

  • You speak for 1–2 minutes on a given topic
  • 1 minute preparation time

Part 3 – Discussion (4–5 minutes)

Abstract and analytical questions related to Part 2 topic

Speaking is assessed based on:

  • Fluency & Coherence
  • Lexical Resource
  • Grammatical Range & Accuracy
  • Pronunciation

Confidence, natural flow, and idea development are key.

Overall Band Score

Each module is scored from Band 0–9.
The overall band score is the average of the four modules.
